What I Learned In Writing This Week is my weekly newsletter with tips and insights on digital writing, based from my own learning experience from several digital mentors.

My Personal Story:

I started writing on Medium in September 2021, but by March 2022, I was frustrated and disappointed.

No viral hits and no $1000 from 1 article, even though I was fairly consistent and wrote exceptionally well (in fact, straight from my heart)

My motivation to write, to learn and to improve was severely hit as I was second guessing my efforts, my time and my passion to become a writer.

Despite the ups and downs, I managed to survive and stay in the game but here is what I learned:

1. It takes time:

❌ Instant success Vs ✅ Long term consistent growth

Know that making it as a successful writer will take time.

Famous digital writers such as Nicholas Cole and Medium star Ayodeji Awosika have been writing for 8+ years.

Niharika Kaur Sodhi, who is a LinkedIn influencer, has been writing since she was 7.

Success aka $$, viral hits and the fame that comes with it seems tempting from the outside but little do we know about the amount of time and effort that goes behind it.

In other words, don't chase instant success. Take your time and work your way through.

2. What next?

❌ Worrying about stats Vs ✅ Planning about what next

1 year ago, I was obsessed with my story stats. I used to check them 10 times a day, sometimes even repeatedly.

My energy was solely focused on analysing the stats and often I used to dwell on stories I had already written that didn't do well.

Instead, if I had focused on brainstorming new topics, creating outlines and editing, I would have been able to write so much more and better.

Always remember this, what is written and published, is done - set it out of your way.

Think of what you'll write next. Utilise your precious time doing this:

a. Plan a week's worth of content

b. Strategise on where you'll publish which content and how you will promote it

c. Improving by learning

Trust me, writing with this approach will save you a ton of time and disappointment.

3. No 2 writers belong to the same situation

❌ Comparing yourself to other writers who are making strides Vs ✅ Knowing your own story

I always say this - No one knows your story better than you. So own it, tell it.

Digital writing has grown into a highly competitive industry. There are high and wide disparities within this industry where a handful few are earning in millions and a vast majority are still struggling to find work.

So it is easy to fall prey to comparisons.

Not only is constantly comparing yourself to others who are successful, toxic, but it is also baseless.

Why?

Because no 2 writers come from the same situations/background.

Always remember - your story is different and work keeping your circumstances in mind.

Working with the right mindset can set you apart from others. Here is a recap:

Know that it takes time
Always focus on what next
Respect your time and know your situations (Don't compare)
